The Roses

Client

The Roses is an updated adaptation of the book The War of the Roses, a satirical black comedy about a couple whose marriage is unraveling, turning love into hate. The story follows Ivy, a successful chef whose career skyrockets as her husband Theo’s career as an architect implodes. Theo often sketches on napkins, and one of those drawings becomes a symbol of hope for their failing relationship. This inspired us to create a cel-animated line-art sequence to open the movie. The goal was to find a fun, clever way to depict how relationships evolve, so the weaving, tangling, and unraveling lines depict the many phases of a romantic relationship. The drawn characters become entangled and untangled throughout the sequence as the concrete poetry inspired typography animates playfully to spell out the credits. All of the artwork is animating on napkins, and at the end of the title sequence, the napkin animates in 3D to fold into a paper rose.
