SHRINKING

The Apple TV+ comedy series, Shrinking, follows a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. In our title sequence we use a maze as a metaphor for the traditional psychological approach. Trapped within the confines of hedges, we follow people finding their own way through the labyrinth, often times resorting to unorthodox solutions of getting from point A to point B. We applied a unique painterly effect to photo-real renders as a way to help the piece feel more grounded, depicting the show’s characters to be in progress and a little rough around the edges. The models themselves are stylized and slightly ambiguous representations of the cast modeled to resemble old Lionel train figurines. The visual of these static figures moving through the maze helps illustrate their struggle to progress despite being stuck with their emotional hangups. However, the show explores how oftentimes people find much more success getting through difficult times by turning to each other for help. By the end of the sequence we tie into that idea, showing the people helping each other to find a way out together.
