The 'Burbs

This dark comedy series from Peacock is an update of the ‘80s cult favorite of the same name. In this reimagining, the newcomer to the neighborhood is Samira, a new mom who uncovers a mystery in the cul-de-sac. Her fear and paranoia as a fish out of water is heightened by her being the only African American woman in the neighborhood.

Showrunner Celeste Hughey suggested using paper cut silhouettes as a visual language to introduce the dangers (real or imagined) lurking in the ‘burbs. We developed an animated sequence of playful vignettes that reveal the eerie underside of everyday suburban life. The scenes visualize Samira’s creeping suspicions— what are her neighbors really up to?
