To set up the big comeback and create audience sympathy, clips from the previous four movies trace Herbie's race car history. Combined with newspaper headlines and playful graphics, we watch the underdog Herbie rise to victory and fame only to see his eventual demise as a forgotten junkyard heap by the end of the sequence.
