For Tubi’s genre-bending series Demascus, yU+co crafted one of the earliest title sequences to integrate AI-generated imagery. Produced in 2022, before AI tools had entered mainstream production, the sequence visualizes a journey through infinite versions of the self. Inspired by the show’s premise — a man navigating alternate realities through cutting-edge technology — we fused Afrofuturist aesthetics, religious metaphor, and surreal dream logic into a single, fluid narrative. A continuous guiding line carries viewers through a morphing Washington, D.C. cityscape, shifting between past, present, and imagined futures. Colors bloom in trippy, blacklight hues while textures draw on the collage work of Romare Bearden and other celebrated Black artists, creating a vivid and deeply personal urban dreamscape.
The sequence’s groundbreaking visuals were achieved through a hybrid process of traditional animation and experimental AI workflows. City assets and characters were modeled and animated in Cinema 4D and After Effects, then processed through early versions of Stable Diffusion and Disco Diffusion to achieve painterly, collage-inspired transformations. This fusion of craft and nascent machine learning allowed us to seamlessly morph landscapes, figures, and patterns in ways impossible through traditional means alone — capturing the fluidity, multiplicity, and emotional resonance at the heart of Demascus while helping to usher in a new era of AI-driven design.
